Drawing a portrait can be a daunting task – it can be difficult to know where to start and how to keep your proportions in check while you try to add more detail. You can watch this time lapse to get an idea of how you can make the process more manageable.
- Start with the biggest, simplest proportions first: The overall height and width, placement of the ear and then the facial features.
- Add shadow shapes early, using straight lines.
- These early stages are crucial as they become the scaffolding for the rest of the drawing as you add more detail. If you get these early stage right, you will find the process of adding a detail much more fun.
